It’s early in the season, but through six games, no team in the Great Lakes Conference has been able to topple the Elyria Catholic Panthers. The latest example of this was Wednesday’s game in Parma, where the Redmen fell 52-29.The first half was a defensive struggle, as the Panthers led 20-12 at the break, but EC outscored Parma 21-6 in the third quarter and never looked back.Faith Williams (13), Abby Winnen (12) and Sam Filiaggi (10) led the way offensively, but Elyria Catholic’s defense really determined the outcome. The Panthers shut Parma’s offense down all night and most notably held the team’s leading scorer, Lindsay Humbel to only five points.Humbel came into play averaging 22 per game and scored 41 in a game last week against Brookside.Elyria Catholic was clearly ready for the Redmen and showed no signs of losing its grip on first place in the GLC.Aside from EC, the rest of the conference appears to be in a competitive battle for second place, but Normandy, Holy Name and Parma have all gone down in their first meetings with the Panthers.Bay, Rocky River, and Valley Forge have yet to face Elyria Catholic, but if the Panthers continue to play like this, it’s tough to envision anyone keeping them from another GLC title. The number of women holding permits has also skyrocketed. An analysis of Indiana State Police data shows the number of state residents who hold active licenses to carry handguns has grown by nearly 50 percent since 2012.The Indianapolis Star analysis also shows an increase in the number of Hoosiers who want the option to carry a handgun in public. The state approved more than 50,000 carry permits in the first three months of the year. That’s more than half of the total number of permits approved in 2015.
Richard Maponya will feature on the next instalment of Brand South Africa’s Play Your Part TV series on Sunday 24 August on SABC2 at 9pm. It has always been Richard Maponya’s dream to see Soweto grow. He was fiercely determined to see Soweto develop economically.Aged 24, Maponya – a teacher at the time – took a job as a stock taker at a clothing manufacturer. The manager sold Maponya soiled clothing and offcuts, which he then resold in Soweto. He eventually saved enough capital to open a clothing retailer in Soweto, despite being denied a licence under apartheid laws restricting business ownership for black South Africans. He had even hired the law firm of Mandela and Tambo to help him obtain the licence.Undeterred though, he continued his life’s journey towards entrepreneurial greatness. In the early 1950s, Maponya and his wife Marina (a cousin of Mandela) established the Dube Hygienic Dairy, which employed boys on bicycles to deliver milk to customers – who didn’t have access to electricity or refrigeration – in Soweto. In the 1960s, Maponya was a founding member and first president of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc), and the founder and chairman of the African Chamber of Commerce.By the 70s, his clothing empire had grown, and he had begun to branch out into other areas: general stores, car dealerships and filling stations. His most recognisable development though has been Soweto’s Maponya Mall.On 27 September 2007 Nelson Mandela officially opened Maponya Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the country.Maponya secured the land on which the mall is situated in 1979, first on a 100-year lease. Then, in 1994, after several attempts, he acquired it outright.Continuing to grow Soweto’s economy, Maponya also established Maponya Motor City on Klipspruit Valley Road in Orlando East. The development included a Volkswagen and Toyota dealership respectively. At that time former Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said the development was “another milestone for Soweto by the Maponya Group as they continue to build sustainable world-class businesses in Soweto”.Maponya Motor City was the first such business in the south of Johannesburg, and now the Maponya Group’s ventures include property development, horse racing and breeding, retail, automotive sales, filling stations and liquor stores.
It can be difficult for a 25-year-old to envision life after age 65, let alone to start saving for it—and many young people aren’t even sure how or where to start. That’s why it’s important for employers to take an active role in educating employees at every stage of life about the benefits of retirement savings plans.401(k) retirement plans can be an automatic and fairly painless way for employees to save pretax dollars for the future. They promote good will between employees and employer, create a culture of financial wellness, and help to attract and retain the best talent. The Who, What and How of a 401(k)When selecting a plan for your organization, it’s important to keep the following factors in mind:What will the 401(k) retirement plan cost to implement? What percentage of the employee’s contribution will the organization match? What resources will the 401(k) retirement plan require in order to set up and manage it? What types of investment options are available within each 401(k) retirement plan and what is an appropriate mix?How will the 401(k) retirement plan fit into the employee’s overall compensation package? How can you use your 401(k) retirement plan to attract and retain the best talent?ParticipationA high employer contribution match is always helpful in encouraging employees to participate, however, specific and targeted messages and advice about the company’s 401(k) plan can also help employees with the decision. Employees will appreciate their benefits even more when they understand their value, so organizations should offer programs that support financial literacy.Alan Hahn, a partner in the Benefits & Compensation Group at Davis & Gilbert LLP in New York City, said in a September 2014 Fiduciary News article, “Think about the most important thing that helps employees save for retirement. It’s the simple act of getting enrolled in the plan and starting to save. Getting employees engaged so they understand the value of saving, and then giving them the tools to get there.”The MixThe SHRM online article Employers Look to Enhance 401(k) Investment Designs by SHRM writer and editor of online content, compensation and benefits, Steve Miller reports that “With millions of workers now relying on 401(k) plans as their primary retirement savings vehicle, U.S. employers are enhancing the investment structures of those plans, according to a new survey by Towers Watson. This includes implementing custom target-date fund (TDF) solutions and outsourcing all or portions of a company’s 401(k) plan oversight. In addition, many plan sponsors are beginning to embrace more complex and sophisticated strategies—like the stretch match— and structures as the challenge of meeting participant and plan needs increases.”On the HorizonThere are two big issues on the horizon that will affect 401(k)s, and employers should take note so they can plan accordingly. This summer’s Supreme Court ruling in Tibble v. Edison means that an employer is now liable for an insufficient oversight of its 401(k) plan with high-fee funds.Additionally, the Department of Labor’s proposed fiduciary rule would require that only fiduciaries provide participants with investment advice. Most mutual fund representatives are not fiduciaries, so this could limit advice from plan providers, or require employers to pay for fee-based advisors. What are you doing to promote retirement savings in your organization? Please join @shrmnextchat at 3 p.m. ET on August 26 for #Nextchat with special guest, SHRM writer and editor of online content, compensation and benefits, Steve Miller (@SHRMsmiller). We’ll chat about how organizations are modifying retirement plans to keep up with trends and encouraging employees to learn about and participate in them.Q1. How do you encourage employees to participate in your organization’s 401(k) retirement plan? Q2. 401(k) match formulas can vary greatly. What match formula does your organization use, and why?Q3. What are the most common questions you receive from employees regarding your organization’s retirement plan?Q4. What tools and educational opportunities do you provide employees to make wise retirement investment decisions?Q5. Does your retirement plan provide auto enrollment and auto escalation? Why or why not?Q6. What sophisticated or complex retirement plan options are employees requesting? Brokerage windows and managed accounts?Q7. What percentage of your employees take out loans or hardship withdrawals, and what to you tell them about the consequences?Q8. Do you provide investment advice to participants; if so, through the 401(k) administrator or an independent advisory firm? What’s a Twitter chat?
Earlier this week, the AP reported that Google continues to collect user location data even when user Location History is turned off. In response, Google initially said that the company was being clear and not hiding anything or misleading consumers: “[W]e continue to use location to improve the Google experience when they do things like perform a Google search or use Google for driving directions.”While that was all technically true, the company wasn’t being clear enough. So, according to an update from the AP this afternoon, Google has now changed some of the text on a page explaining how to “manage or delete” Location History. The new language reads:This setting does not affect other location services on your device, like Google Location Services and Find My Device. Some location data may be saved as part of your activity on other services, like Search and Maps. When you turn off Location History for your Google Account, it’s off for all devices associated with that Google Account. The old language implied that if Location History was turned off, location would no longer be recorded on the device.I don’t believe that Google was being deceptive in its previous notifications and discussions of location, but it wasn’t sufficiently clear about what was going on and that Location History isn’t a global control over location data on the device. If people trust that their data are protected and not being improperly exploited, they’re probably going to be OK with what Google does, provided they understand what’s happening. Communication and transparency are key to trust. And consumer trust is a key to success.Given the data scandals and controversies, we’re now in an environment of paranoia and suspicion, in which earning consumer trust is getting harder. Clear, straightforward disclosures and communication are critical. So it’s positive that Google made this change, even if it was prompted by the AP.The company must still go further and ensure that regular folks really get what’s going on with their data, so that usage is truly consensual and there aren’t things happening in the background that they don’t know about or understand. The post Google clarifies it does capture location data after Location History is turned off appeared first on Marketing Land. From our sponsors: Google clarifies it does capture location data after Location History is turned off HomeDigital MarketingGoogle clarifies it does capture location data after Location History is turned off Posted on 17th August 2018Digital Marketing FacebookshareTwittertweetGoogle+share Google clarifies it does capture location data after Location History is turned offYou are here: Related postsLytics now integrates with Google Marketing Platform to enable customer data-informed campaigns14th December 2019The California Consumer Privacy Act goes live in a few short weeks — Are you ready?14th December 2019ML 2019121313th December 2019Global email benchmark report finds email isn’t dead – it’s essential13th December 20192019 benchmark report: brand vs. non-brand traffic in Google Shopping12th December 2019Keep your LinkedIn advertising strategy focused in 202012th December 2019
Spiceworks IT Desktop for SMB IT ProfessionalsSmall to medium sized companies are proliferated with technically savvy one man shops, that are burdened with slim budgets and no-one to fall back on when faced with new problems or technology. Over the years they have learned to just buckle down and figure it out the hard way; wading through technology manuals, slogging through articles and blogs on the internet, or find a peer to share information and BKMs. We recently started working with an ISV that has a new economy twist to help this under-served group of hard-working professionals. The Spiceworks IT Desktop is a “free” application suite that will automatically inventory, monitor, troubleshoot, report on and run a help desk for their IT networks. The application is connected to a professional online community where users can share ideas on best practices; collaborate on IT projects, rate and review products, and form groups around particular areas of interest with companies like them. Of course, nothing is REALLY free, over 150 advertising sponsors (including Intel) support the cost of developing the tool, and you must agree to providing anonymous data about the inventory in your network; kind of like that company that records what you watch on your television (like how I got around permission to use their name?). This is not a cloud based solution, like a newsgroup or a search engine. You download the application onto a single desktop and run it from there; the ads are pulled down from the Spiceworks servers, statistical data is forwarded back, and you have a direct link to the community.Power Manager Plug-in sponsored by Intel The Power Manager extension can be used to track overall power-savings due to turning a group of machines on/off per a set schedule. This extension will load a widget on your Spiceworks dashboard that shows you 3 things:1. Visually what schedule/time the machines managed by the extension should be on/off. 2. Red-Dot – tells you exactly what machines are on/off at the current time.3. Dollar Savings – using some estimates of price/kwh and watts used per device; an estimate of dollars saved per day/month is given. The plug-in will turn machines off (per a schedule) and then use Intel vPro Technology to turn the machines back on (per a schedule). It will then use those numbers to calculate power saved as well as money saved (estimates of course). The graph that is shown is really telling you what should happen as a result of the schedule you put in place; the RED DOT tells you specifically which machines are actually up/down at the current time… So in a perfect world, the RED DOT should be very close (or on top of) the graph/line. If it isn’t, that tells you that some machines are off or on that shouldn’t be… The extension has some very basic defaults for price/kwh as well as watts used by machines in the suspended state, these are for reference only and are clearly not precise (but it is enough to get you started). Future Plug-insCurrently, the Spiceworks IT Desktop supports Discovery of PCs that may have Intel vPro Technology installed, and/or provisioned. More functionality will be added to the list, including a Scheduled Maintenance Plug-in, Hardware Inventory and a remote control console for connecting to a PC, but below the OS; see the POST messages, edit the BIOS, boot to a text-based diagnostic image. Look for blogs over the next few months.About SpiceworksSince 2006, the Spiceworks IT Desktop user base has grown to 830,000+ IT professionals in 196 countries worldwide. This includes 77,500 Managed Service Providers (MSPs) who rely on the software to manage and support client networks. Together these organizations use Spiceworks to support 28 million employees and manage 45 million computers and devices. http://www.spiceworks.com

About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Arsenal manager Emery: I’m taking senior players to Blackpoolby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal will not be taking Sunday’s FA Cup third-round clash with Blackpool lightly, according to manager Unai Emery. The Gunners fielded a weakened side against the League One club in the Carabao Cup earlier this season. But Emery says he is serious about winning England’s premier knockout trophy and will take senior players with him to Bloomfield Road.He said: “It’s a new competition we are going to start, the FA Cup. In the history, it’s been very important for us.”Arsenal is the team that has won this competition 13 times, more than anyone else. It’s a title and it’s a possibility for us to do something important.”We are going to start that at Blackpool. We know them because we played against them and we have the respect. We’ll prepare for the match with this respect for them, but also respect for this competition. It’s a way to [win] a title.”The Spaniard added: “I am going to play with the players to be competitive.”If we need some young players to do one mix, but finding this power to be stronger with them, we will do it. The priority now is Blackpool.”
